Level Three: Extreme Restoration
Extreme Restoration includes reconstructive work, with repair of damage to central part of the image and repair of torn images.

The first image shown was a low resolution photograph taken of a very old mid 1800's tin type. Our artist cleaned up the large spots, water stains, and other major damage. The photo was then enhanced to bring out detail and improve contrast and brightness. The background was smoothed to allow the figure to stand out. Sometimes, even with photographs of pictures or documents and even with a low resolution jpg photo, we can improve the image considerably.
The second imageof this couple was taken in the 1950's on a bright day and was also a very low resolution scan. It needed considerable sharpening and constrast adjustments. Many of the areas needed reconstruction work and major scratch repair, especially to the face and bodies. We also removed the writing from the photo. Although we prefer to work with high resolution scans, we know that sometimes it doesn't always work out that way and we can still manage restore these images considerably. |

This third image is another photo that was taken with a digital camera at a moderate resolution. The original photo of the child was taken about the time of 1905 on a bright sunny day so most of this child's dress and bonnet were extrememly washed out. We fixed the rip down the middle of the photo and eliminated the tape outline. We were able to sharpen and adjust the contrast to the areas of the photo that needed it. We could have given this photo a sepia tone to match the original but the owner chose the black and white style.

The fourth image is a restoration of a school identification card. It was scanned at a high resolution. This document was in very poor shape and was in need of considerable restoration, especially to the face of the subject. Again, we were able to repair and enhance the image as close as possible to bring this document back to it's former condition.
